Claude Code vs. Codex: The VS Code Agent Leaderboard Just Shifted

Anthropic’s Claude Code has now surpassed OpenAI’s Codex extension in Marketplace installs and review volume, despite launching later. It’s also carrying a higher average rating.

The positioning is interesting. Codex is framed as both an IDE-side partner and a way to delegate larger tasks to the cloud. Claude Code leans more terminal-first, with subagents, slash commands, and MCP support baked into its pitch. A lot of the community chatter seems less about raw model capability and more about workflow fit, limits, guardrails, and how much autonomy you’re comfortable giving an agent that can actually run commands.
