Running open-source AI locally in VS Code sounds great in theory. More privacy, lower cost, full control. In practice, it’s a bit more complicated, especially on a standard laptop without a GPU.
This hands-on look shows that while local models can work (and even plug into Copilot Chat), performance, model limitations, and tooling quirks make it far from a drop-in replacement for cloud models. It’s possible, just not always practical for heavier workflows.
