Is 2026 the year of the "agentic engineer"?

Great new post by Howard M. Cohen over on ADT’s Human-in-the-Loop blog (newly renamed from Citizen Developer). Howard notes that the rise of AI agents is forcing a rethink in how we design, build, and scale apps. We’ve gone from “write a good prompt” to “orchestrate autonomous workflows across tools, APIs, and memory.”

Howard makes the case for a new kind of role: the “Agentic Engineer.” Not just someone who can wire up an LLM, but someone who understands how to design systems where agents perceive, act, and reflect, without going off the rails. Agentic engineering might sound niche today—but so did DevOps once.
